2. Public Airing of CVA Video
A CVA member in St. Paul relates that our DVD Honoring God’s Creation
was aired on the St. Paul, MN community access station on 6/12, 6/17,
6/19, 6/26, 7/3, and 7/10 at 10:30 AM.
To obtain this 26 minute video, go to
www.christianveg.org/books.htm . It costs only $2 (to cover our
printing costs), and there are lots of other CVA materials available at
that site.
3. Religion and Animals Course at Duke
Rondy Elliott writes: This coming semester, I will be co-teaching a
for-credit course at Duke University titled "Religion and the Moral
Status of Animals." The faculty member and co-teacher will be Kathy
Rudy, PhD. She provided the academic clout to push this thing through.
We will examine the major world religions and what they have to say
about animal treatment, and we will explore what the cultures within
which a particular religion is dominant actually do in practice. We have
15 students signed up. We're excited!
I'll be doing the Christianity part and will use Matthew Scully's
book Dominion to complement our foundation text, Paul Waldau's A
Communion of Subjects.
Other news from North Carolina . . . "Our State" Magazine, a
beautiful publication that is widely read all over the state (I think
it's in every doctor's waiting room) has a feature article on the Duke
Chapel Blessing of Animals. In the places where they quoted me, I tried
to be as clear as possible that this is not just a "feel good" event but
one where we address widespread and institutionalized animal abuses as
well. It's not just about dogs and cats!
I see the group is continuing to be active . . . fantastic!
4. Essay by Fr. John Dear
The only diet for a peacemaker is a vegetarian diet By John Dear SJ
Created Jul 8 2008 - 05:50
In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last week to speak at the National
Convention of Unitarian Universalists, I met my old friend Bruce
Friedrich. We spent eight memorable months together in a tiny jail cell,
along with Philip Berrigan, for our 1993 Plowshares disarmament action.
A former Catholic Worker, Bruce is now one of the leaders of PETA,
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. He gave a brilliant
workshop on the importance of becoming a vegetarian, something I urge
everyone to consider.
I became a vegetarian with a few other Jesuit novices shortly after I
entered the Jesuits in 1982 and later wrote a pamphlet for PETA,
"Christianity and Vegetarianism." I based my decision solely on Francis
Moore Lappe's classic work, Diet for a Small Planet, a book that I think
everyone should read.
