More people are choosing to transition to plant-based diets
because of the abundant evidence of their positive effects on human
health. However, Oxford ethicist William MacAskill (formerly William
Crouch) believes that vegetarianism’s main core should be our
treatment to animals. He believes that the health benefits rely more
on the decrease in consumption of red meat, while the animals who
suffer the most abuse are those who produce milk and eggs. MacAskill
challenges people to look into their ethical values in order to make
food choices.

Compassion is really what drives people to make ethical choices
and what helps people stick to those choices. When people become
vegetarian for health reasons, they may “cheat” every now and then.
On the other hand, when people choose foods based on compassion,
they rarely or never think about eating something that came from a
suffering being.
