Even though we live in what we considered a civilized society,
the way the chicks are treated is a far cry from civilization.
Today’s hens are “egg-laying machines” who live miserable short
lives. Their babies are born in incubators, away from their mother’s
warmth and protection. The surviving babies are then sold during
Easter and Spring time at feed stores where they are exposed to
thirst, starvation, abuse, noise, fear, etc.
Many people buy chicks for children at Easter without realizing
that these babies need care and protection, and that most of them
will live short, miserable lives at the hands of children who cannot
properly care for them and who lose interest in these “toys” very
quickly.

Jesus compared his love for us to a hen’s love for her chicks (Luke
13:34). Mother hens have been endowed by our Creator with a strong
maternal instinct that yearns to protect and care for their
offspring. To deny these hens and chicks their right to be
together is to deny God’s love for them.
