Sad News: “Ag-Gag” Bill Approved in Iowa

Iowa has become the first state to approve an "ag-gag" bill that makes undercover filming in a farm a misdemeanor. Animal activists and caring consumers are outraged that this piece of legislation actually protects the ones who abuse animals and punishes those who expose it. Matthew Dominguez, a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States, puts it well: "The intent behind the legislation is to put a chilling effect on whistleblowers on factory farms… It begs the question of, what exactly does animal agriculture have to hide?" Factory farmed animals in Iowa are at the mercy of giant corporations that seem to only care about profit. How have we arrived at this place? Aren't we, stewards of God's Creation, called to be good caretakers of all animals ensuring that they are treated with compassion and mercy? It’s sad the Christian church at large has not shown outrage about this issue. Silence takes the side of the oppressor.
