What is a “Daniel Fast”?

Many churches around the U.S. are encouraging their congregations to try a "Daniel Fast" for 21 days. This fast is based on the account of Daniel, the biblical character who chose to eat a plant-based diet while imprisoned to avoid violating Jewish customs, and who after ten days was healthier and stronger than those who ate regular food with animal ingredients. A Daniel Fast consists of whole grains, fruits, beans, nuts and vegetables; and according to Richard Bloomer, interim chair of Health Sport Sciences at the University of Memphis, who followed 13 men and 30 women for 21 days, this diet decreases the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases such as stroke and diabetes.

What many consider a fast to be done for a few weeks seems to be the way God intended for us to eat on a daily basis according to the book of Genesis. A well-balanced plant-based diet helps take care of our bodies, and it certainly consists of such an abundant variety of delicious foods that people who adopt it would not feel deprived of anything!
