In the last issue of “Peaceable Kingdom,” a vegetarian journal for
Quakers and people of Faith, Robert Ellwood considers the potential
impact of stories and films with animals, ranging from Coyote and Mickey
Mouse to Black Beauty and Babe, who converse like humans. This
editorial, “Talking Animals,” helps the reader understand that animals
have been chosen as characters to represent humans and their customs
instead of animals and their own reality.
However, Robert Ellwood
believes that God’s animals should be used in stories and films in order
to convey to children the widespread problems that affect them and their
