Organic: Happy Animals? Maybe Not

Temple Grandin, animal scientist at Colorado State University, is very well-known for her claims that she is able to think like a non-human animal and in many ways experience life from their view. Grandin brought important changes to the meat industry a decade ago, mostly alleviating fear and suffering in especially designed slaughterhouses for cattle. When asked about her view on organic farms and sustainable animal agriculture she mentioned that although conditions are better than in factory farms, still many animals suffer from the lack of treatment with antibiotics, which organic farms avoid. Another example she mentions is that in some organic farms animals are infested with parasites. She calls this "bad becoming normal."

“Bad becoming normal” should be the slogan for the animal agriculture industry, which legally victimizes God’s animals on a daily basis. It should be deeply troubling to us, Christians, that purposely inflicting unnecessary pain and fear to animals, and subsequently killing them for profit and taste, has become normal. Instead, we need to tirelessly strive for plant-based diets to become normal; thus making God’s Creation a peaceful and loving place.
