Straight from the Source

Omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid, commonly known as DHA, is very important for a human body. DHA is found in every organ of the body as well as in muscle tissue and in the brain, and makes brain membranes flexible and optimizes electrical signaling. DHA is widely found in fish; however, it is possible to get omega-3s without ever eating fish. By manufacturing DHA directly from algae, like fish do, companies --such as The Martek Biosciences Corporation-- are able to produce it without mercury (found in some fish due to the extent of water contamination).
