Ammonia Treated Beef Still Found Contaminated with E. Coli

Beef Products Inc. that provides ammonia processed beef to McDonald’s, Burger King and other fast-food giants, as well as the federal school lunch program (estimated 5.5 million pounds of the processed beef last year alone) is on the spotlight. Overwhelming evidence shows that in spite of their ammonia treatment their beef is still contaminated with E. Coli and Salmonella. Moreover, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had endorsed the company’s ammonia treatment and said it destroys E. coli “to an undetectable level”, which led to the decision in 2007 to exempt Beef Products from their routine testing of hamburger meat. Since 2005, E. coli has been found 3 times and salmonella 48 times, including back-to-back incidents in August in which two 27,000-pound batches were found to be contaminated.

By now, most people should be aware that the meat industry lacks ethics and integrity, and that their thirst for profit knows no limits. Avoiding the intake of animal products helps us avoid food contamination with E.Coli and other common bacteria found in them.
