The Meat Industry’s Monstrous Power
This article explains why there is a likely link between swine flu or
H5N1 and intensive agriculture systems, where animals live in crowded
environments with poor ventilation and sanitation. Moreover, the author,
Mike Davis, points to the regulatory agencies that should monitor and
regulate the meat industry instead of letting it raise animals as if
they were commodities, playing with human health. Davis also refers to
the Pew Research Center advisory that underscored the continual cycling
of viruses in factory farms and the “promiscuous” use of antibiotics in
hog farms. Not surprisingly, the Pew commission reported systemic
obstruction of their investigation by the meat industry, including
upfront threats to withhold funding from cooperative researchers.

The swine flu crisis lays bare the meat industry's
monstrous power
It is appalling, although not surprising at all, the enormous power
the meat industry has. Greed and profit drive this industry to the point
that human health, the suffering of animals and the state of the
environment are expendable. However, the meat industry’s power ends
where the consumer power starts. It is up to each of us to take a stand
for what it right and live up to our calling to be good stewards of
God’s creation.
