What Schools Feed Children
Michael Markarian, president of the Humane Society
Legislative Fund, a social welfare organization that lobbies for animal
welfare legislation and works to elect humane-minded candidates to
public office, expresses his concern and outrage about the cruel and
unsanitary slaughter of farmed animals whose meat is later on fed to our
children at schools throughout the US.
One of the most worrisome aspects of the food industry
is the fact that U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector
General (OIG) concluded in last week's report that "there was an
“inherent vulnerability” for handling violations to occur and not be
detected by USDA inspectors because the agency does not provide
continuous surveillance of all areas in a slaughter establishment."
