Older Canadian Cattle Allowed in the US
At the beginning
of this month, the US border was opened to older Canadian cattle,
lifting the ban on meat and cattle imports from Canada after a cow
there tested positive for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE),
which has been linked to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare
and deadly nerve disease that has been blamed for more than 150
human deaths, mostly in Britain. The Montana Farmers Union believes
that this is a risk not acceptable to consumers or to beef cattle
ranchers throughout the United States.

When we exploit
God's animals we cause misery to them and to us. Many serious
diseases have been linked to consuming animal products, especially
to those obtained from animals raised under extreme confinement in
factory farms. Showing compassion to God's animals benefits our
health and also our spiritual growth, since we reflect God's love
for Creation.
