Seal hunt

As animal advocates get ready for this year’s protests against Canadian seal clubbing (that takes place in April), hunters on their part want the public to listen to their reasons for continuing such practice. They claim that seal clubbing is a humane operation closely monitored by Ottawa, and that it is the best way of killing them. Moreover, they say it supports a traditional way of life.

On the other hand, animal advocates believe that "… this hunt is cruel and unsustainable and quite frankly should have been ended many decades ago," as explained by Rebecca Aldworth of the Humane Society of the United States. It is estimated that in 2006 hunters made more than US$26 million from pelts alone and the market for seal products such as seal oil, rich in omega 3 fatty acids, is growing.
