Saint Cloud State University chooses cage-free eggs

On Feb 22, 2007, the Humane Society of the United States, HSUS, announced that Minnesota’s Saint Cloud State University Dining Services will be phasing in the use of cage-free eggs in its student dining facilities, effective February 27. “Saint Cloud State University has taken a positive step for animal welfare by phasing out its use of eggs from caged birds.”… “The Humane Society of the United States applauds Sodexho’s efforts to reduce animal suffering, and we encourage other schools to follow its example,” commented Paul Shapiro, Factory Farming Campaign director for The HSUS.

In the United States, approximately 95 percent of eggs sold come from hens confined in barren battery cages, who suffer tremendous stress and pain due to the limited space and standard practices such as debeaking.

The decision to purchase cage-free eggs instead of the ones produced by battery caged hens is a step towards reducing animal suffering. The consumer, however, should research on his/her own to make sure the eggs are indeed cage-free since this definition often does not guarantee outside access to all the hens in a facility during prolonged periods of time.

Replacing eggs in one’s diet with plant-based egg alternatives is the most effective way to take a stand against the industries that exploit hens.
