Christian Vegetarian Association Presents:
Take Heart!

The future according to Andy Rooney

During his last’s week’s commentary on 60 minutes, news correspondent Andy Rooney reflected on the dietary habits of people and some issues around food.

He mentions, among other things, the recent E. Coli outbreak due to the consumption of infected raw spinach, and the fact that he would not eat rabbit or horse meat, even though he eats steak, lamb and pork chops.

Interestingly enough, he recognized that although vegetarians might be seen as “nuts”, he finds the idea of growing animals to be eaten, “terrible”. Mr. Rooney speculates that in 50 or 100 years maybe civilized people everywhere will refuse to eat animals.

Andy Rooney recognizes the absurdity of refusing to eat certain animals over others. Although he acknowledges the fact that raising animals for food is “terrible”, he continues to eat them. While we are not aware of his reasons, we see many people like him, who are aware of the issues surrounding meat-eating but fail to take a stand and make a life change. Without compassion, it would be hard to try to imagine the suffering that farmed animals go through. We have Jesus as our model to follow. He teaches us to be compassionate, to love and to honor all of God’s creation.
