Matthew 5:11-12
(RSV)
"Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter
all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the
prophets who were before you.”
Sometimes, when standing up for our Faith, we undergo persecution and
alienation. However, this verse reminds us that even though times get
hard we need to rejoice in the reward of knowing we are being obedient
to God, and therefore fulfilling our calling.
Many times we might be the target of unpleasant comments or even feel
rejected and alienated. Christian vegetarians have been called to
witness God’s love and compassion toward all creatures. We’ve been
called to spread the good news about vegetarianism as good stewardship
of all of God’s creation. When we raise awareness of the cruelty of
factory farming, of the health problems related to a meat-based diet and
to the pollution animal agriculture is responsible for, we are choosing
to obey God. It is for this that we need to rejoice and be glad.
