1. Make Slaughterhouses Transparent

Jedediah Purdy, law professor at Duke and the author of "The Meaning of Property: Freedom, Community, and the Legal Imagination", shares why his undercover investigation of a slaughterhouse in 1999, if done today, would probably earn him a criminal conviction and land him on a registry of "animal and ecological terrorists" due to the so-called Ag-gag bills. Purdy suggests animal agriculture should make slaughterhouses more transparent if truly they have nothing to hide.

If slaughterhouses were more transparent about their business, more people would refuse to eat animal products. However, transparency is something consumers should not expect from such an industry. After all, the less consumers know, the better it is for the industry, and sadly, the worse for God’s Creation.

3. Animal Cruelty Convictions

Five former employees of a pig breeding farm in Wheatland that supplies pork to Tyson Foods have been convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to probation and fines. An undercover investigator for HSUS took footage showing workers kicking live piglets like soccer balls, swinging sick piglets in circles by their hind legs, striking mother pigs with their fists and kicking them when they showed reluctance to leave their offspring.

Although the unimaginable pain and suffering endured by these animals certainly deserved much tougher sentences and fines, the fact that these cases made the spotlight has helped expose the routine victimization of God’s animals in factory farms and slaughterhouses.

For this cruelty to end a transition to a plant-based diet is imperative.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse

(RSV) Acts 10:13

And there came a voice to him, "Rise, Peter; kill and eat."

Peter recognized that this dream should not be taken literally to mean that he should proceed to kill and eat all animals. Instead, "Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the dream might mean" (Acts 10:17). He recognized its meaning when the gentile Cornelius invited him to dinner. Peter realized that the dream was instructing him not to go out and eat meat, but to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. The Jewish dietary laws should not prevent the spread of Christianity, and, at Cornelius' dinner, Peter related to his hosts, "You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit any one of another nation; but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean." (Acts 10:28). Whatever the meaning, it does not argue that modern factory farms, with all their consequences, have God's blessing.

5. Vegetarians Don’t Support Cruelty

This month is “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month” and most people shudder at the thought of cruelty inflicted on a dog or cat. However, everyday millions of animals suffer unimaginable cruelty when raised for food while the people who consume them don't realize they are supporting this cruelty by purchasing animal products.

People who choose plant-based foods are not only healthier but also more compassionate. The egregious cruelty perpetrated on God's animals raised for food is the most voluminous cruelty worldwide given the numbers of animals abused by the meat, egg and dairy industries. Billions of sentient beings are at the mercy of our choices. Choose compassion!
