1. Grosser than Pink Slime
Most people have heard about the
"pink slime" (ground-beef filler) that has shaken consumers although
our government officials seem to believe there is nothing wrong with
it because they approve it for consumption. Should it surprise us? Not
a bit. Just check out the regulations and inspections set for poultry
What's Even Grosser Than Pink Slime?:
agriculture business is out of control. Ethics, compassion, public
health and even respect for consumers have no meaning to this
industry. However, as long as consumers keep supporting them by buying
their products, the larger and more powerful they get. Christians are
called to participate in the reconciliation of God’s Creation. I
believe this is possible when we align our faith with our values and
choices. In this case, supporting the meat, egg and dairy industries
goes against our Christian faith.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
By love I do not mean natural tenderness, which is in people
according to their constitution, but I see it as a larger principle of
the soul, founded in reason and spiritual understanding, which makes
us kind and gentle to all our fellow creatures as creations of God.
~ William Law (1686 – 1761), English cleric, divine and
3. Arsenic in Chicken Flesh
news about chicken flesh containing arsenic (a known cancer-causing
agent) and other undesirable substances has finally become information
that the public at large can access. Although it's obvious that none
of these harmful substances should be present in chicken flesh or any
other animal's flesh used for consumption, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA), still considers this issue harmless due to
arsenic’s low levels.

finally admits chicken feed contains cancer-causing arsenic (but keep
eating it, yo!):
Many unnatural practices such as routinely
feeding antibiotics to God's farmed animals, or arsenic or even
feeding chicken manure to pigs and cows should be seen as terribly
unethical and unhealthy practices, and should have never been defended
by the FDA when it’s an agency that should be protecting our health.
We are far better off not consuming animal products and instead
adopting a plant-based diet that is God's ideal for us (Gen. 1:29–31)
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Psalm 145:9
The Lord is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he
We’ve been created in God's image of love; thus,
through Him/Her we are able to show love and compassion onto all
5. Raising Vegan Kids?
According to the
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic
Association), “appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total
vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and
may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain
diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for
individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy,
lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes.”
However, there are still a lot of myths surrounding vegan diets that
are preventing parents from making the decision to raise their kids
vegan. Ruby Roth, author of the children's book "Why We Don't Eat
Animals", explains why misinformation about plant-based diets is
confusing parents and leading them into not adopting a plant-based for
themselves and their kids.
Should Kids Go Vegan?:
The Bible tells us that God’s ideal
diet for us, prescribed in Genesis, is a plant-based diet. After all,
it’s healthy, it instills and encourages compassion towards God’s
animals and helps us be good stewards of Creation. It’s a win-win
choice of diet!
