1. Kosher Meat under Scrutiny: Kosher meat has
come under the public’s eye since the majority of Israel’s beef, and a
large portion of America’s kosher meat, comes from South America where
slaughterplants that produce kosher meat use the “shackle and hoist”
method: lifting them off of the ground by one hind leg prior to slitting
their throat, as is required by Israel’s chief rabbis, the final
authorities on kosher meat entering the Jewish state. Last year People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) obtained footage of kosher
slaughter in Uruguay (http://tinyurl.com/2oe2hx)
shows animals struggling in the air and bellowing, and once on the
ground they are shown writhing and being restrained by multiple workers
who step on them and prod them before the cut.

2. "Cattle dragged and choked...Knocking ‘em four,
five, ten times. Every now and then when they’re stunned they come back
to life, and they’re up there agonizing. They’re supposed to be
re-stunned but sometimes they aren’t and they’ll go through the skinning
process alive. I’ve worked in four large [slaughterhouses] and a bunch
of small ones. They’re all the same. If people were to see this, they’d
probably feel really bad about it. But in a packing house everybody gets
so used to it that it doesn’t mean anything." ~ Veteran USDA meat
inspector from Texas describing what he has seen. Quote from documentary
movie Slaughterhouse, 1997.
3. Doreen the Downer: Due the recent
slaughterhouse investigation in a California plant, the abuse that
animals raised for food suffer, especially downer ones, reached the
public's eyes and hopefully consciences. While most people have a hard
time watching graphic videos about animal abuse, it is important to be
aware of the reality of factory farming. For all of us who'd like to
spread the world about downer cows, Mar Fiore, cartoonist and animator,
produced a great animated video, suitable for everyone, showing the way
hamburgers are produced, the risk for human health and of course the
cruelty inflicted on downer animals.

4. (RSV) 2 Peter 1:4
"...by which he has
granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these
you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of
passion, and become partakers of the divine nature."
God calls us to follow Christ's message of love, compassion and
peace; and to escape the temptation of earthly desires that very often
only bring misery to us and the rest of Creation. Our creator wants us
to actively participate in the reconciliation of Creation.
5. Judge’s Rule on Poultry: A lawsuit brought
by the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) and East Bay Animal Advocates
against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) arguing that the USDA
had misinterpreted the 50-year-old act H.R. 8308 when excluding poultry
from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act (HMSA), was dismissed by a
judge who ruled that chickens are not "livestock," and, as a result, are
not subject to the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act.

Judge Rules Poultry Are Not "Livestock"
Excluding poultry from being humanely slaughtered is an offense
against God, given it shows disregard for the lives these animals as if
they were mere objects and not the result of God’s love and creativity.
6. The Cruel Reality Behind Animal Transport:
Most people are unaware of the barbaric, cruel and long transport that
animals suffer from farms to slaughterhouses. After a secret
investigation by 10 major animal charities, including the RSCPA,
Compassion in World Farming and the World Society for the Protection of
Animals (WSPA), the shocking evidence of their suffering has been
revealed. In the footage obtained, animals including horses, pigs, sheep
and chickens are seen being transported thousands of miles across the
world, experience unimaginable suffering and many times finding death
before reaching their destination.

(graphic) is also available in the same page.
There is no excuse for the brutal treatment God's animals raised for
food receive at the hands of humans, who supposedly are called to show
compassion and mercy to all creatures. The meat industry, coupled with
the consumers who support it, have made animals' lives a living hell on
Earth. We could all help alleviate the suffering of these creatures by
transitioning to a healthy, balanced and delicious plant-based diet.
