Welcome to the weekly CVA blog!  In it you will find famous quotes, news and commentaries.

2. Famous quote T. Colin Campbell PhD, Cornell University (www.TheChinaStudy.com)

3. High Levels of Mercury, Arsenic and Selenium in Fish

4. Bible verse John 8:12

1. Number of Teen Vegetarians Increasing:  According to the latest Harris poll the number of teen vegetarians has tripled in the last ten years, indicating that about three percent of teens are vegetarians. Dietitians are warning that although a well-balanced vegetarian diet can be healthy, teens should not give up meat without learning how to replace it with plant-based foods in order to make sure the body receives enough of the nutrients (iron, protein, B vitamins, etc.) that it needs. Great meat substitutes are tofu, seitan, beans and "mock" meats.

2. "Cows' milk protein may be the single most significant chemical carcinogen to which humans are exposed."
 ~ T. Colin Campbell PhD,
Cornell University (www.thechinastudy.com)

3. High Levels of Mercury, Arsenic and Selenium in Fish:  A University of Pittsburgh study, “Contaminants in Freshwater Fish: Toxicity, Sources and Risk Communication,” indicated that mercury levels in freshwater fish were 2.2 to 4.8 times higher in fish caught in the Canadian Lake Erie than in those caught near former iron and steel mills on the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers in Pittsburgh. Conrad D. Volz, Dr.P.H., M.P.H., principal investigator, department of environmental and occupational health, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, expressed his concern by saying “These results indicate to us that purchasing fish from a local market cannot guarantee food safety. We recommend a more rigorous testing program for commercial freshwater fish with particular attention to fish entering the U.S. from other countries.”

4. (RSV) John 8:12:
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

God calls us to follows Jesus' teaching of compassion, mercy and peace. Living according those principles helps us fulfill the yearning of our souls for we are in communion with God and reflecting His/Her love for all Creation.

5. One Million Pounds of Beef Recalled:  Cargill, one of the largest meat processors in the world, announced on Nov 3 a beef recall of 1 million pounds of ground beef after a sample taken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) was confirmed positive for E. coli O157:H7. Cargill Meat Solutions said the recalled ground beef was produced at the Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, facility between October 8 and October 11, and distributed to retailers across the country.

In spite of the health risks associated with raising animals for food, especially in factory farms, the USDA and meat industry continue to exploit God's animals for the sake of profit and taste. As stewards for God's Creation our diet should accord Jesus' teaching of compassion, mercy and peace.

6. H5N1 Bird Flu Strain Confirmed in the UK:  Tests have confirmed that the bird flu strain found in Norfolk turkeys at a farm in East Anglia, UK, is the deadly H5N1 type that is dangerous to humans. Thousands of turkeys, geese and ducks have been slaughtered and emergency protection zones were immediately set up around the site. Farmers and health officials fear that if the disease spreads, it may lead to shortages of turkeys for Christmas and cause tremendous consequences to the industry.

When we cause misery to God's Creation, we cause misery to us. Raising animals for food under intense confinement and suffering not only endangers our health but most importantly, it shows disobedience to God.
