Turkey
Farm Waste into Energy:
The state of Minnesota, which
currently ranks No. 1 for turkey production in the United States,
produces over a million tons of turkey litter each year. A Minnesota
plant that has developed the technology to burn turkey waste and convert
it into energy expects to generate about 55 megawatts of electricity
each year. The electricity is being sold to Xcel Energy under a 21-year
power purchase agreement.

The suffering of God's
animals should be taken into account when searching for sustainable
forms of energy. As long as compassion and mercy are not extended to all
creatures, we are failing to honor and obey God.

3. US Religious Leaders Unite to Confront Global
Warming:
Episcopal, Catholic, Jewish and
evangelical U.S. religious leaders agreed on the need to confront global
warming. The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of
the Episcopal Church and a former oceanographer, stated that most
religious people have reached accord on the need to act. However,
Russell Moore of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary said that
although Baptists favor environmental protection, "Many of us ... are
not convinced that the extent of human responsibility is as it is
portrayed by some global warming activists, or that the expensive and
dramatic solutions called for will be able ultimately to transform the
situation."

Being good stewards of
God’s Creation calls us to take care of the Earth. Global warming is a
real threat that affects fauna, flora and resources. Factory farming
contributes 17% of global warming gases and causes tremendous misery to
billions of animals every year. A plant-based diet would help fight
global warming and to alleviate the suffering of animals raised for
food.

(RSV) Psalms
119:60:
"I hasten and do not delay to keep thy commandments."
There’s no real Faith
unless there’re actions. We are called to be good stewards of God’s
Creation by following Christ’s teachings of compassion, mercy and love.

Eating Lower in the Food Ladder:
Sustainable artist Shawn Dell Joyce explains the reason why
it would be more environmentally friendly if humans tried to consume
products from the bottom of the food ladder, that is, more grains,
legumes, nuts and fruits rather than animal products. She provides the
reader with evidence supporting the inefficient conversion of grains
into meat when raising animals for food.

Making Cows Burp Less:
After abundant evidence was found indicating that farmed
animals contribute to 18% of global warming gases, scientists are
looking into finding the right mix of food that would help cows burp
less, and therefore emit less global warming gases. Michael Abberton, a
scientist at the UK-based
Institute of Grassland
and Environmental Research, stated that "There is a common misperception
about how methane gets into the atmosphere," ... "It is actually through
belching rather than the other end," noting that the average dairy cow
belches out about 100 to 200 liters of methane each day.

Finding ways to
control the emission of global warming gases into the atmosphere, while
ignoring the suffering of farmed animals is not consistent with being
good stewards of God’s Creation. When we reduce our meat intake, or
adopt a plant-based diet, we are actively participating in the
reconciliation of God’s Creation by alleviating animal suffering and
helping restore the environment.
