1. Oxford Center for Animal Ethics:
More than 100 academics from 10 countries have agreed to become advisors
to the new Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics (www.oxfordanimalethics.com).
This is the world’s first academy dedicated to the enhancement of the
ethical status of animals through academic publication, teaching and
research that aims to put animals on the intellectual agenda. The
Center’s first director, Oxford theologian, the Rev. Professor Andrew
Linzey, said: “The support of such a large number of internationally
recognized academics underlines just how important animals are as a
moral issue.”

Rev. Andrew Linzey is also a member of the Christian Vegetarian
Association board.
2. Famous Quote:
"The victim feels the suffering in his own mind and body, whereas the
victimizer ... can be quite unaware of that suffering. The sword does
not feel the pain that it inflicts." ~ Philip Hallie, From
Cruelty to Goodness
3. Serious animal welfare problems revealed at the
Centers for Disease Control, CDC: The animal rights group
PETA called for the resignation of director Julie Gerberding, last
Monday, due to serious problems — including monkey deaths from
dehydration — dating back to 2002. The CDC's labs have been on probation
since last year with the Association for the Assessment and
Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care-International. According to Tom
Skinner, CDC spokesman, "Nobody is more devoted to the proper and
ethical treatment of animals in science than Dr. Gerberding."

Being God’s stewards of God’s creation entails taking care of God’s
animals in a loving, respectful, just and compassionate way. The Centers
for Disease Control serves as the national focus for developing and
applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and
health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health
of people of the United States. This agency should show the highest
standards of animal welfare. The CDC cannot claim ignorance or lack of
resources for their poor animal welfare regulations. It is lack of
compassion and profit that usually drive this kind of situations.
4. (RSV)
Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do
everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the
Father through him.”
Everything we do, including our diet, should be honoring and
glorifying to God. We worship a loving God who wants us to live out our
life in thankfulness and reverence for all Creation.
5.
Norway's whalers won permits: On Dec. 1, Norway's whalers
won permits to harpoon 1,052 whales in 2007 despite a global moratorium.
Norway officials say that minke whales are plentiful in the North
Atlantic, but Brad Smith of Greenpeace said: "Keeping such a high quota
is totally meaningless considering that the quotas have not been met
since Norway resumed (commercial) whaling in 1993."

The killing of whales is a barbaric practice with absolutely no
compassion for the victims. The survival of Norwegian people does not
depend on the flesh of whales; rather, the killing is driven by economic
reasons. The transition to a plant-based diet would show reverence and
mercy to the lives of these majestic animals, products of God’s
creativity.
6. Animal-rights candidates won election to the
Dutch parliament: Marianne Thieme and Esther Ouwehand
were sworn in as Members of the Dutch Parliament hence becoming the
first animal-rights MPs anywhere in the world. Ms. Thieme says, "I miss
compassion in our society. When I look at animals, they are innocent. We
are treating them like they are things, like they are bicycles. That's
not what we have to be as human beings. We have common sense and moral
awareness, so we have to use that as well." An important part of the
manifesto the Party for the Animals (PvdD) says protection for animals
should not be defined by the market.

This is joyous news for God’s animals. Hopefully, these new MPs will
be supported by the public in their work towards a more compassionate
society. More countries should follow this example.
