1. Pork producer loses lawsuit: Premium Standard Farms Inc.,
second largest pork producer in the US with headquarters in Kansas City,
has lost a lawsuit over the stench their hog farms produce. On September
22nd, each of the three families involved were awarded $750,000 and an
estate; and there are more than 50 such cases still pending. According
to one plaintiff, the company’s actions in addressing the smell of waste
from 350,000 pigs on 1,300 acres could be summarized as, “I see nothing,
I smell nothing, and we do nothing.”

While the waste of such factory farms pose a serious threat to our
health and the environment, the unimaginable pain, stress and terror
hogs suffer should be of primary concern. These are God’s creatures who
have instincts and needs; who experience joy and sorrow; and whose
God-given rights are totally ignored.
2. (RSV) Genesis 2:15: The LORD God took the man and put
him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.
The privilege and responsibility given to us by God to take care of
the Earth is a sacred one. By adopting a plan-based diet we can help
reduce pollution and restore the state of the environment.
3. European Union concerned for overfishing: The EU is calling
for quota reductions for exotic deep-sea species, after the warnings of
scientists and conservationists who say that many species are at risk of
disappearing. In spite of the recommendations to totally ban the fishing
of exotic deep-sea species, which can live up to 150 years and reproduce
slowly, the EU prefers a volume cut of 33 percent for next year from
2005 in annual catches shared around the 25 EU states, then a further
33-percent cut in 2008. It is because of the depletion of EU commercial
stocks (i.e. cod and hake) that deep water fish have become an
attractive option.

The destruction of the aquatic flora and fauna is mostly linked to
overfishing and illegal fishing. A plant-based diet would help restore
the aquatic biodiversity and would alleviate the suffering that fish go
through in the hands of humans.
4. Famous quote - Fyodor Dostoyevsky:
"Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love
everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you
perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better everyday. And you
will come to love the whole world with an all-embracing love."
5. Commercial fishing impact on oceans biodiversity:
Wherever we turn the negative effects of commercial fishing are evident.
The indiscriminate exploitation of aquatic creatures is reaching to a
point of no end. According to James Woolford of the World Wildlife
Fund's European fisheries campaign, "The trail of destruction behind
industrialized fishing must be stopped or our children will be left with
a barren ocean." Industrial fishing is as wasteful as it gets. For
example, up to 80 percent of some North Sea plaice catches are thrown
overboard dead or dying due to their small size and two sharks are
killed for every one swordfish caught illegally off Morocco for the
European market.

The alarming rate at which animals are being exploited is simply
appalling. The destruction of living creatures for the sake of profit
and taste cannot be honoring to God. There’s not much time to turn
things around and bring healing into the world. Christians are called to
exercise our privilege and responsibility to be good stewards of God’s
creation.
6. US involvement in protecting ocean life: Last week, US
official announced their plan to get involved in protecting fish stocks
and their habitats, especially, helping to eliminate destructive ocean
fishing practices such as bottom trawling. According to Lisa Speer,
Director of the Water and Oceans Program at the Natural Resources
Defense Council, "Unregulated bottom trawling is the single most
destructive fishing practice on the high seas, and it needs to be
stopped." Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was put in charge of the
US effort.

Hopefully US officials will take seriously the threat that commercial
fishing presents. People in leadership roles should lead by example,
that is honoring God’s creation.
