2. Problems with Cancel Culture part 5: A Christian View
I think Christian teachings militate against cancel culture, for several
reasons. For one thing, Jesus seemed much more concerned about people’s
actions than their words. He condemned those who showed no mercy for those
who were orphaned, widowed, or disabled, while the Bible does not describe
him policing word choices or ideologies.
More importantly, the Bible shows Jesus offering redemption for those who
have sinned, such as the tax collector. While we might not be able to fully
atone for passed misdeeds, all of us have the capacity to change and to
contribute to the well-being of others.
In contrast to the unforgiving, sometimes cruel manifestations of cancel
culture, Jesus taught that we should forgive our brother. This is not
necessarily an act of kindness or generosity. Those who believe that they
cannot be forgiven will have little incentive to amend their ways. Indeed,
they will be much more inclined to avoid taking responsibility for their
actions, regardless of the cost of their doing so.
Forgiveness is not the opposite of accountability. Accountability
discourages anti-social behavior. Forgiveness is distinctive in that it
involves removing a desire for revenge. Consequently, accountability aims to
remove dangerous people from the public and to discourage harmful activity.
In addition, whenever possible, we should offer people the opportunity to
perform redemptive activities that help other individuals.
