2. Thoughts on Moral Frameworks, part 6: Compassion

Compassion – feeling with – is an attractive framework for morality. As one tries to experience in one’s own mind what others feel, one naturally becomes inspired to alleviate suffering and enhance the joys of others. Unless one arbitrarily limits compassion to certain individuals, compassion can spur us to help as many individuals as we can.

A drawback of compassion is that it can be emotionally draining. Those who actually “feel with” the suffering of others can be overcome by grief, which is compounded by the fact that we are very limited in the degree to which we can alleviate suffering in the world. Therefore, we need to be particularly compassionate toward those who strive to make the world a better place. While we might disagree with each other about strategies to achieve our goals, we should offer emotional support for each other. We should acknowledge others’ good intentions and the value of the work they do, even while arguing for different strategies. Unfortunately, some people in the animal protection movement, distraught over the massive, extreme abuse of nonhumans, are not very compassionate toward those activists with whom they disagree strongly on strategic grounds.

Next, I will consider kindness.
