Vegan Outrech staff member Vic S. leafleted with a volunteer at Winter Jam in Reading West Virginia. He writes:

It was very cold, but there were lots of good interactions and readers. One man asked for another to give his daughter who wanted to go veg. One man asked for 5 more. A woman also asked for two after she saw others reading it.

Upcoming Activist Opportunities

Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA now donates $16/hr. for tabling and $25/hr. for up to 3 hours for leafleting to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. 2. Liberals and Conservatives, part 3: Shades of Gray

As I have discussed, contemporary liberals tend to believe that people are generally good at heart. They want to reduce income inequality, make sure that the government protects everyone from the vicissitudes of life, and protect nonconformists from discrimination. Liberals often maintain that institutions usually originate as and almost always become self-serving, and therefore we need to limit institutions’ power. They note that institutions that are widely held to be sacred become impervious to criticism, and these institutions often use violence against critics to hide the hypocrisy and corruption that nearly always accompanies unbridled power.

As I see it, humans are social creatures who have a natural tendency to be concerned about the welfare of others. We also seek to satisfy our own needs and desires. These goals often conflict, and sometimes we do things that serve others and other times we do things to serve ourselves at the expense of others. The only people immune to the charge of hypocrisy are the rare individuals who are totally dedicated to others and the narcissistic (widely held as despicable) people who only care about themselves.

We can’t change human nature, but we can choose how to live among ourselves. Radical individualism tends to result in harm to those who are weak and vulnerable. Uncritical allegiance to institutions tends to curtail individual freedom and creativity, victimize those who have difficulty conforming to institutional norms, and render people blind to real challenges to the community (such as resource depletion or climate change).

I think we need to recognize that we live in a world filled with ambiguity and inconsistency. We need general principles to help us make everyday decisions, but we must remember that these principles are approximations of the good and that there are always exceptions. This view encourages open discussion, which among well-meaning people can be respectful and constructive, even when there is strong disagreement.
