1. Original Sin, part 66; Salvation through Faith part 1

What kind of faith can help us transcend the attractions of Original Sin? For Christians, I think a central component of faith is belief in salvation via the risen Christ. As I will discuss in later essays, I think salvation involves belief in the power of love, as manifest in the story of the risen Christ, to overcome the “powers and principalities” that rely on the scapegoating process to victimize vulnerable individuals. First, I want to explain why I reject the widely held belief that equates salvation to entry into heaven.

The writer of Ecclesiastes declared, “For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the beasts; for all is vanity. All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.” (Ecclesiastes 3:19-20). I am unaware of any reliable evidence for what happens to our sense of self (often called the soul) when we die. Some people have used accounts of people who have had “near-death” experiences to illuminate what heaven is like, but these people were not dead. Elaborate theories about what life is like in heaven, as best I can tell, reflect the power of human imagination much more than any verified account.

Even if one asserts that heaven exists, there remain heated disputes among Christians over the criteria they believe God uses to determine who does and who does not gain access to heaven. Nearly all disputants agree on one thing – that they themselves meet the criteria for eternal heavenly bliss.

There are elements of the scapegoating process in disputes about who are “saved” and thereby gain access to heaven. Dividing the world into those who are saved and those who are not saved leads to victimization. Those claiming to be “saved” tend to believe that they are “better” and more beloved by God than those who are not saved. This serves as a basis for holding that they are entitled to exploit and abuse the “inferior” non-saved individuals, whether those individuals are human or nonhuman.

We had a good crew of volunteers. There were 5 of us, and getting leaflets out to the crowd was pretty easy. I had some good conversations, including with hunters and farmers. Many didn't approve of factory farming or had health concerns. Still, overall the crowd seemed very disinterested in talking about veganism - most had not considered reducing their intake of animal products. The kids were more receptive, and a couple teens had their parents sign them up for the 10 Weeks to Vegan program. People enjoyed the Primal Strips we offered, but few of them signed up.
