Please DONATE to the CVA to support our important ministry. This year, we distributed over 100,000 booklets to Christians at concerts, revivals, and other events.

1. Activist Feedback

Grace writes:

I couldn't make it to Newsboys concert on 11/16 due to work. However, I handed approximately 450 leaflets out today to concertgoers at the Benaroya hall (Seattle's heart of downtown symphony place, great location for leaflet activities) Today's event was a Christmas concert by the Northwest Christian university orchestra/symphony. A lot of college age groups, young adults, and teens as well as older adults came to enjoy the concert. Some people stopped and asked genuinely, so I started a conversation about veganism and they understand why this is so important.

Upcoming Activist Opportunities

Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA now donates $16/hr. for tabling and $25/hr. for up to 3 hours for leafleting to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. Winter Jam is a particularly effective venue, with lots of young people who are receptive to our message. Contact Lorena at [email protected] if you can help.

2. Original Sin, part 56: Truth, part 1

The reason that “Original Sin” continues to plague us is that it has been hidden. We can address visible sins, but individually and collectively we will continue to commit those sins that we cannot recognize or refuse to acknowledge. This is why I think that scapegoating is the Original Sin – it is crucial to the scapegoating process that the truth is hidden. If people recognized that they have attributed excessive guilt to scapegoating victim(s), the community would not have the sense of relief, safety, and camaraderie that accompanies the punishment or banishment of the scapegoating victim(s). They would not have the sense that they have eradicated the evil in their midst.

As I’ve discussed before, Jesus exposed the scandal of the scapegoating process. If we are to embrace this crucial teaching, we are left with the uncomfortable prospect of acknowledging the evil in our own souls and the harm we do to the world as a consequence of our greed, thoughtlessness, or other failings. Jesus assured us that the truth will set us free (John 8:32). I think the truth is that service to God can lead to individual peace of mind and communal salvation. Another view, held by many Christians, is that the truth is Jesus was God. Those who believe this tenet will be rewarded with personal salvation and peace of mind. The first interpretation requires great faith in the wisdom and insight of Jesus. The second promises great rewards if one believes something for which, in my opinion, the empirical evidence is not strong. The first has the potential to bring peace and well-being to communities, while the second (being focused on the individual) does not necessarily impact communities positively or negatively.

The scapegoating process has resulted in massive suffering for humans and nonhumans, and it threatens human civilization. Confronting the scapegoating process requires acknowledging and incorporating all truth and rejecting the lies, fairy tales, magical thinking, and superstitions that undergird the scapegoating process. This can be challenging for people, but the future of humanity hangs on the balance. I will continue this exploration next week.
