1. Original Sin, Part 51, Salvation (continued)

Previously, I discussed salvation from an individual perspective as relief from anxiety and despair. Communities also need salvation, particularly because the scapegoating process is a communal event.

Communities can never be completely saved, because there will always be individuals who readily sacrifice the communityís well-being to serve selfish desires, and because humans are predisposed to scapegoating. Consequently, I think salvation should not be regarded as a state of being but rather as a goal. How do we approach that goal?

I think it is helpful to see ourselves as healers in service to God. We live in a broken world filled with violence and injustice. There is also goodness, kindness, and mercy, which give us hope for a better world. We have the capacity to heal, and doing so helps save Godís creation while giving us direction and purpose in life.

Next week, I will start to consider how we can heal our broken world.
