1. Winter Jam Leafleting Report

Leafleter extraordinaire Rick Hershey, with friends, had major success at recent Winter Jam events. Below are his reports:

Tulsa: Chip and I handed out 2400 CVA booklets at BOK Center in cold weather mostly to kids at Winter Jam today. That was 60 less than last year, but the weather was nice last year.

Springfield: Michael, Chip, and I handed out 3000 CVA booklets mostly to kids at Winter Jam today.

Wichita: Chip and I handed out 4200 CVA booklets mostly to kids today. I believe that this was a record high for us at a Winter Jam. We enjoyed pleasant weather for a change.

Contents include:

  • The Glimpse of the Peaceable Kingdom shows a Puerto Rican human and the crocodile he befriended twenty years earlier playing together.
  • The Editor's Corner Essay,"Don't Impose Your Ideas on Me," discusses the process by which marginal ideas such as ours--that animals are kin and not commodities--become mainstream.
  • Animals, far from being our inferiors, are "living by voices that we shall never hear," as we are reminded in theUnset Gem.
  • One of theNewsNotescalls our attention to the change of heart of gifted songwriter Renee King-Sonnen, who, after marrying a rancher, opened her heart to the animals and persuaded her spouse to do likewise. They are now converting their ranch into a sanctuary.
  • The late Norm Phelps, activist, historian, and religious studies scholar, tells his story inMy Pilgrimage.
  • "Moosewood's Easiest Chocolate Cake" may not be the epitome of whole-plant nutrition, but this vegan treat is undeniably delectable. Check out the Recipe section.
