The Food Standards Agency in Great Britain intends to set-up a detailed
plan in order to have cameras in every one of the 400 slaughterhouses in the
region. Tim Smith, chief executive of this agency said, “Where we find
resistance it is from operators with something to hide”.
It is not surprising that operators of slaughterhouses don't want cameras
around because they know that animal abuse is widespread and that food
safety is also compromised. Having cameras in slaughterhouses will certainly
reduce the incidence of animal abuse. Hopefully, the consumer will pressure
the meat industry to make this a requirement and thus help to at least
alleviate the pain and suffering of farmed animals at the end of their
lives.
