Unfortunately, Ohio voters pass ballot issue #2 in favor of animal
agriculture. Backed by the Ohio Farm Bureau, the amendment was a pre-emptive
strike against the Humane Society of the United States, which wants farmers
to change the living conditions for laying hens, veal calves and breeding
pigs to allow the animals to stand, sit, spread their appendages and turn
around. Wayne Pacelle, the U.S. Humane Society's president and chief
executive, said the farm bureau and other agribusiness lobbying groups
pushed for the measure to block true reform.
Profit trumps compassion in many cases, such as the above. Maybe if more
people knew about the true nature of factory farming the results would have
been different. It's not until we expand our circle of compassion to all
creatures that we are actively participating in the reconciliation of God's
Creation.
