On November 13th, the House of Representatives voted in favor of the
Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), which unfortunately could be used to
arrest, prosecute and imprison law-abiding citizens exercising their first
amendment rights to peacefully assemble and protest the mistreatment of
animals.
Tracy Silverman, Society for Animal Protective Legislation Legislative
Counsel, said “It is shameful that on the same day America honored the
memory and legacy of Dr. King, Congress declared the millions of Americans
who advocate for greater protection of animals to be terrorists and
criminalized many of the tools used by activists to challenge industry abuse
of animals.” The bill now goes to the President for signature.
God calls us to defend and protect victims. Christ himself teaches us how to
bring healing and restoration into the world through compassion, love and
peace, which ultimately always triumph.
