1. Following Jesus as a Path to Peace
How can following Jesus overcome the scourge of scapegoating? Jesus repeatedly attended to the spiritual and physical needs of outcasts, such as those who were poor, widowed, and guilty of sins. These people have often been the victims of scapegoating. And, he praised the Samaritan - a member of a despised group, for helping a robbery victim.
Jesus taught his followers to love everyone and to wish harm on no one. He did not, however, forbid resisting evil. Instead, he urged nonviolent resistance, as in his teaching to "turn the other cheek," which expresses contempt for unjust violence.
Jesus told his Jewish audience, "No one comes to the Father, but by me" (John 14:6), this might have been true given the corruption and hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees. However, this saying need not apply to all people in all times. If it did, the implications would be dire. Eternal truth and reconciliation with God would require believing in Jesus alone. Anyone teaching otherwise would endanger children's souls. The "logical" response to such heresy would be eradication, leading to grave injustice and potentially threatening human civilization itself.
I am convinced that Jesus taught nonviolence. We may elect nonviolent resistance against those who harm us, but what about other humans and nonhumans who are victims of violence? Does our commitment to nonviolence leave them condemned to suffering? I will explore this next.
