1. Faith of Christ and Capitalism, Part 5

Capitalism tends to reward hard work and creative thinking, and many benefits of human civilization have depended on these attributes. The impetus to gain wealth, power, and prestige has, among many things, spurred innovations in medicine and the sciences. Yet, does this translate into a greater general sense of well-being and happiness?

Competition to provide the greatest value in the marketplace of goods and services means that producers must be mindful of both quality and price. Failure to recognize and abide by the demands of the market will generally result in failure of one's business. This encourages businesses to try to maximize productivity and to minimize costs. This can result in substantial harm to the "productive units" of their enterprises, whether they are human laborers, nonhumans trapped in factory farms, or nature's limited land, water, and energy resources.

In short, if one's work environment is not stressful, the company is probably not using one's labor as efficiently as competitors. Factory farmers whose compassion for nonhumans reduces productivity will have great difficulty competing with heartless competitors, and similarly businesses that prioritize worker well-being will tend to fail.

Next, I will address the question: Is growth a necessary component of capitalist economies? If so, is perpetual growth possible? Eventually, I plan to offer thoughts on how we might have a sustainable economy that attends to the needs of everyone.
