1. Evangelicals Need to Stand for God’s Animals

“Make no mistake: the brutal, torturous treatment of animals as they are raised to provide food is a real evil that demands confrontation”, says Kirsten Powers in her USA Today article where she explains the need for evangelicals to take a stand for God’s animals who are abused in the hands of humanity. She refers to the “Every Living Thing” initiative, which “will begin a year-long effort to engage Christians in dialogue around the biblical mandate to care for animals.”

Not surprisingly, research shows that 89% of Protestant pastors agree that Christians have a responsibility to speak out against animal cruelty and neglect; however, only 17% said their churches were involved in addressing animal welfare at the local level.

Anita Krajnc, co-founder and organizer of the “Save” vigils [Toronto Pig Save], documentary filmmaker, and journalist, was charged under the Criminal Code with mischief under $5,000 for providing water to thirsty and terrified pigs in a stopped truck en route to their slaughter in Canada. The video shows her pleading with the driver to let her give them some water after he asked her to stop.

We live in a world where animals raised for food are mere objects to the animal agriculture industry. It’s so uplifting to learn of so many compassionate people, like Anita Krajn, who are willing to risk much to show kindness to these animals.

As stewards of God's Creation we are intimately involved in reconciling all Creation, where peace and love reign and suffering is alleviated. Our actions should reflect our beliefs, which lead us to make compassionate and loving choices.

5. Egg Production is Cruel!

Many people who want to make compassionate choices don’t see anything cruel about eating eggs; after all, they believe that in order to produce eggs no animal needs to be killed.

Sadly, the reality is very different because egg-production is one of the cruelest industries on Earth.

It involves:

  • Intense confinement, mostly battery cages.
  • Grinding up male chicks, who are useless to the industry.
  • Debeaking of hens, instead of providing them with enough room.
  • No protection by laws. Even the Humane Slaughter Act excludes poultry.
  • Unnatural short lifespans.
  • Tragedies where tens of thousands of hens die at the same time, such as in barn fires, barns collapsing, etc.
  • Restriction of natural behaviors: the vast majority of hens don’t mate, or nest, or roost, or touch grass, or breath fresh air, or feel the sun, or raise their chicks, etc.
  • Due to their living conditions and the maximization to produce high number of eggs, hens suffer from lameness, bone-brittleness and muscle weakness.
  • Minimum veterinary care: those hens who are sick are generally left to die.

6. This Week’s Video: Dollop of Cruelty: Animal Abuse Exposed at Daisy Brand Dairy

Egregious cruelty to animals has been exposed by PETA at a massive dairy factory farm in Texas, Daisy Farms, which supplies milk to Daisy Brand sour cream and cottage cheese.
The video was shown on CBS News lats week and it showed:

  • Newborn calves, who had been ripped away from their mothers, choking and gagging as workers forced feeding tubes down their throats.
  • Cows who were pregnant or had just given birth were kicked, beaten, and stabbed with pens and knives.
  • After having their horn buds painfully burned out of their skulls with caustic paste, hours-old baby calves were isolated in plastic hutches, unable to nurse from their mothers or see any other calves.
