1. Feminism Calls for Compassion

Women historically have been targets of exploitation and objectification. It was not long ago that women were considered property in the U.S., much like animals are still today. Females have the capacity to give birth, and it is this that prompts the industry to abuse and control females’ reproductive system. The lives of female cows, pigs and chickens are short and full of unimaginable pain and terror, so farmers can steal their milk, eggs and babies. These females cannot speak up, but we can.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.”
—Albert Einstein (1879–1955)

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

When we show the fruits of the Spirit and live according to God's will –that is showing compassion, justice and love-- Christ is alive in us.

5. Governor Chris Christie Shows No Empathy

Chris Christie, governor of New Jersey, just vetoed a bill that “would have required middle schools and high schools to create advisory committees to help develop alternate menus for school lunch, including options for vegetarian or vegan students.” Not surprisingly, the bill had been approved by the overwhelming majority of the Senate and Assembly.

When people depend largely on the support of the animal agriculture industry (in Christie’s case the pork industry) their values and ethics are trumped by money. It’s really a shame that a person in his position, who could actually push for change that would benefit all of God’s creation, chooses to cave in and ignore the plight of God’s animals and the need for more plant-based options at schools.

6. This Week’s Video: Bo the Cow

Bo the Cow is an animated short movie about the dairy industry. It tells the story of a newborn calf who is taken away from his mother and sets out on a journey around the farm to reunite with her.
