1. The Barbaric Chicken Industry

“If you torture a chicken and you are caught, you’re likely to be arrested. If you scald thousands of chickens alive, you’re an industrialist who will be lauded for your acumen.” These are the first sentences of Nicholas Kristof, New York Times Columnist, who writes about the barbaric chicken industry and the video shot by an undercover Mercy for Animals investigator, who exposes the routine abuse chickens are subjected to.

Animals raised or food are not covered under animal cruelty laws, and chickens are not even protected under the Human Slaughter Act. Truthfully, what is done to chickens reflects the depravity humans are capable of. Instead, we should reflect God’s love for animals by showing them compassion and mercy.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

“Poor animals! How jealously they guard their pathetic bodies…that which to us is merely an evening’s meal, but to them is life itself.”
—T. Casey Brennan (1948–)

3. What Have We Done to Chickens?

Due to the insatiable hunger for the flesh of chickens in our society, these poor animals have been pushed to grow so fast and so fat that in the last 60 years chicken weight has increased more than four times. Broiler chickens are so overweight at 6-7 weeks of age that many suffer organ failure and their bones break under their massive weight. Sadly, Dr. Michael Lilburn, a professor at Ohio State University's Poultry Research Center correctly states, “The bulk of the U.S. population still doesn't care where their food comes from, as long as it’s cheap."

What we do to chickens is truly barbaric. We cause so much suffering and pain to them, and so unnecessarily, that in the process we bury our compassion, our sense of justice and even our decency. We violate the precious bond that connects us to God’s animals.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Proverbs 11:3

The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.

The animal agriculture industry is not particularly known for its integrity but instead for its deceiving nature. Supporting it makes us accomplices of their deceit and destruction to God’s Creation.

5. Worst Torture Operation in the U.S.

Approximately 9,000 animals have been rescued from “Coco Farms”, an illegal slaughterhouse in Florida. According to investigators, this was "the worst torture operation in existence in the United States," where animals suffered unimaginable pain and terror before dying. According toRichard "Kudo" Couto, founder of the group Animal Recovery Mission (ARM), "They were boiling animals alive. They were drowning animals in boiling water. They were skinning animals alive — and I'm talking about completely skinning animals while they were alive. They hung goats upside down, stabbed them in the throats, and then twisted their heads completely off while they were still alive. I've never seen anything like the ongoings at this property."

God’s animals are indeed at our mercy. They rely entirely on our capacity to feel compassion and making choices accordingly. If we don’t, we seed pain, terror and death that affects us all, humans and animals.
