1. Second NYC School Goes Veg!

New York City’s Peck Slip School (PS343) in lower Manhattan announced it has gone vegetarian, thus becoming the second school in NYC to serve only veg meals. The school’s new all-veg menu is loved by parents and students alike. According to Principal Maggie Sienna: “We decided to implement the vegetarian menu because of the health benefits of a diet including more legumes, vegetables and whole grains and our concerns about the environmental impact of meat production. As it turns out, the vegetarian dishes are pretty delicious, too — we are seeing more kids trying and liking chickpeas, brown rice and whole wheat pasta — kale salad was a huge hit.”

Kudos for these two NYC schools, which upon learning about the environmental, health and animal concerns linked to the animal agriculture industry decided to do what’s right and serve only vegetarian meals. This sets a great precedent that we hope many schools follow soon.

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

“As we evolve spiritually, we become more awake to the truth of interbeing, that all living beings are profoundly interconnected, and that by harming others, I harm myself because the life in that apparent ‘other’ is the same life that lives in this apparent ‘me.’

As our hearts open to deeper understanding, our circle of compassion thus automatically enlarges, and spontaneously begins to include more and more ‘others.’ Not just our own tribe, sect, nation, or race, but all human beings, and not just humans, but other mammals, and birds, fish, forests, and the whole beautifully-interwoven tapestry of living, pulsing creation. All of Us.”

~ Dr. Will Tuttle, The World Peace Diet

3. The Other Better Protein

This article in “Muscle and Fitness”, written in a humorous but also assertive way, sets the record straight: animal products are not the only source of protein. In fact, the author, Ian Cohen explains that much scientific evidence indicates that those who eat a plant-based diet tend to live longer and have lower rates of certain diseases, such as heart disease.

Please visit Healthy Eating: Cut the Bull When it Comes to Protein.

It’s great to see article exposing the benefits on plant-based diets directed to people who tend to believe that meat is the only way to build muscle.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Revelations 21:4-5

...he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away." And he who sat upon the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.

We should strive to actively participate in the reconciliation of God's Creation. Choosing a plant-based diet is a testament of how much suffering we can alleviate, in humans and God’s animals.

5. Good News for Vegans!

The new Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s report states that “an organically grown vegan diet had the most potential health benefits and the lowest estimated impact on resources and the quality of the ecosystem.”

Finally the advisory committee is taking into account what makes the planet thrive: a plant-based diet, which promotes our health and the health of the environment while showing compassion to God’s creatures.

6. Recommended Booklet: The Compassionate Athlete

Vegan Outreach just released their new booklet titled “The Compassionate Athlete” that features top-rated athletes who eat a plant-based diet. The booklet also offers tips and a meal plan for those who want to stay fit and healthy.
