1. The Cruelty of Egg Production

The cruelty involved with egg-production is frankly unspeakable. The degree of exploitation and abuse egg-laying hens and their babies suffer should appall everyone.

Read these 10 facts about the egg industry in the U.S. and share them with friends and family:

  1. Millions of male chicks are ground alive
  2. Egg laying hens are routinely mutilated
  3. 95 percent of U.S. eggs come from caged birds
  4. Caged hens are unable to extend their wings
  5. Nearly one-third of hens arriving at slaughterhouses have broken bones
  6. Forced molting kills thousands of hens
  7. Free range hens may never see the daylight
  8. No egg laying hens reach old age
  9. 20,000 hens in one barn still counts as free range
  10. ”Organic” and “humane” labelled eggs are misleading

2. Famous Quote

“Non-violence is the weapon of the strong.”
~ Mahatma Gandhi

3. We Don’t Need to Eat Animals

Read this compelling excerpt from the book, Meat Logic: Why We Eat Animals by author Charles Horn, in which he sets the record straight as far as the two most common rationalizations people use to continue eating animals: it’s part of our evolution and it’s needed for health reasons.

Both excuses, as Mr. Horn explains, simply don’t stand on solid ground. Plenty of scientific evidence shows that we are not obligate omnivores and that in fact we can thrive on plant-based diets; and that implying evolution pushes us to eat animals simply trumps morals and ethics.

To read the full excerpt please visit Does Evolution Have a Gun to Our Head to Eat Animals?

If we don't need to eat God's animals to live healthy, joyful lives then when we choose to eat them we are causing unnecessary suffering and death, which doesn't align with our Christian values.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Colossians 3:12

"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, and patience,..."

Clearly, Jesus ministry was focused and continues to do so, on compassion and kindness. As creations and children of God, we share His/Her essence of love, which we are called to reflect onto all Creation.

5. “Pets” or “Food”?

Most people look at pets in a different way that they look at the animals raised for food. And this disconnect is the reason why the animal agriculture industry is able to get away with the egregious abuse to farmed animals. So, by maybe seeing “pets” in factory farmed conditions people might be able to see the cruelty involved in this industry.

Please visit What Would it Look if We Treated Our Pets Like Animals in a Factory Farm? (PHOTOS).

The animals called “food” and those called “pets” suffer alike. This alone should prompt us to also include them in our sphere of compassion, thus emulating God’s love for all Creation.
