2. Moral Frameworks part 7: Kindness
Last week, I considered compassion as a helpful framework for morality. It has many attractions, but it can be emotionally draining. What about kindness?
From a moral standpoint, if we try always to be kind, we will often bring
joy and avoid harm to others. From a practical standpoint, it is relatively
easy, and not emotionally draining, to ask ourselves, “Is what I’m doing
kind?” This has advantages over a question people often ask themselves: “Am
I justified in doing this?” This latter question can lead us astray because
our personal desires often bias our sense of justice. Striving to be kind
puts the focus on the needs of others and undermines our predilection to
yield to our own, natural sense of personal entitlement.
We can’t do what others want or even need all the time. Sometimes, there
is no way to meet everyone’s needs, and sometimes there are irreconcilable
conflicts between individuals when it comes to meeting important needs. If
we honestly reflect on whether or not our choices are kind, we will tend to
follow a righteous path.
It can be exhausting to treat every choice in life as an ethical dilemma.
Next week, I will attempt to synthesize the thoughts of the first 7 parts of
this series.
