2. Original Sin, part 2
In reflecting on the Garden of Eden story, I want to first acknowledge that the ancient Hebrews developed this story. They never meant for it to be reinterpreted in light of the life, ministry, and death of Jesus of Nazareth. I think Christianity offers new and potentially valuable insights into this story, but I would never claim that the Jewish understanding of their own story is less complete or less valid than Christian understandings.
John the Baptist, referring to Jesus, declared, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). What is “the sin of the world”? Perhaps because of the influence of Augustine of Hippo, Christians tend to think of “the sin of the world” as synonymous with “Original Sin” in the Garden of Eden. What is the “Original Sin” from which (presumably) all other sins emanate?
Perhaps the most widely held view is that the Original Sin was disobedience. God told Adam and Eve not to eat the forbidden fruit, and they disobeyed. However, I do not think disobedience should be seen as “the sin of the world.” Their disobedience might reflect a human tendency to want what we have been told not to have, but we always have the choice of whether or not to obey. Moreover, Adam and Eve’s disobedience itself does not determine whether or not future humans will commit similar sins, which should be a feature of “Original sin.”
Next week, I will continue this exploration.
