1. Activist Feedback
Liz, who tabled at Earth Day in Columbus, Ohio, writes:
I wanted to report on the Earth Day event here in Columbus. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity and privilege to represent CVA at this event. I had a wonderful time and would welcome the chance to table again next year!
The event brought many blessings to be thankful for, including good weather (no rain!), helpful event organizers who provided both tents and tables, and many kind, curious people I enjoyed talking to throughout the day and into the evening. I had many interesting conversations with Christians and others--some vegan or vegetarian, and some just curious. Several of the Christians I spoke with commented on the need for an organization like CVA, since their impression has been that many Christians are unaware of, indifferent to, or even somewhat antagonistic to the idea of plant-based eating and living. More than a few people said they were glad to see CVA at the fair.
Also of note: CVA member Megan D., who has a family member active in Cleveland for CVA, stopped by with her beautiful baby and offered kind words and encouragement. Much appreciated!
2. On Faith, part 7
It seems that that people can find Biblical support for virtually any position on moral issues. There are many reasons for this, including 1) many writers with a range of views contributed to the biblical text; 2) many passages and stories (such as the parables) use metaphors that can be interpreted in different ways; 3) translators have interpreted the original Hebrew and Greek words differently, reflecting their own differing theologies; and 4) Christian leaders have often taken great liberties in metaphorically “interpreting” texts in ways that are opposite to a more literal interpretation of the words. How can one discern the “right” path for a faithful Christian?
For starters, I suggest that we look at the life and teachings of Jesus for general guidance. If we can discern consistent themes, they can serve as principles for behavior. We might argue about whether or not Jesus’ words should be taken literally, for example when he said, “I have not come to bring peace, but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). However, I think it is less disputable that Jesus sided with those who were weak, vulnerable, and victimized. We should have compassion for such individuals, and this leads me to conclude that, if our choices are guided by compassion, we will tend to be just and righteous.
I will continue these thoughts next week.

3. CVA member Arthur Apolet writes:
The documentary Earthlings reveals why veganism is spreading rapidly throughout the United States and the world. Genuine animal lovers oppose any and all forms of cruelty to animals, not just their pets! This 95 minute film can be viewed online here.
