1. Activist Feedback

Rick Hershey, who leafleted at Winter Jam in Springfield, Missouri, writes:

Chip and I handed out 3300 CVA booklets mostly to kids at JQH Arena in Springfield, MO.This venue typically sells out because its capacity is only 10,000. The bands then did a couple songs outdoors for the people who couldn’t get in.

2. On Faith, part 2

It is very difficult to discern God’s intentions for creation. In trying to address this question, I will first consider evidence that God played a role in creating the universe. The Bible describes God creating a beautiful, peaceful, harmonious world in which no individual harmed another. Skeptics doubt the historical accuracy of the creation story, noting that there is voluminous scientific evidence that contradicts this account.

Those arguing for God’s existence often maintain that the existence of the universe demonstrates the existence of a creator God. An atheist might reply: 1) we can now explain scientifically many things that had baffled the ancients and encouraged them to offer explanations involving divine forces, and just because we don’t yet understand everything about the universe doesn’t mean we need to propose theories about divine forces; 2) positing that God created the universe leads to the equally vexing question of how God came into existence; and 3) arguing that a divine force is responsible for creating the universe does not, itself, demonstrate that the Judeo-Christian account is any more accurate than the many, many other creation accounts of other religions.

The second issue, which I regard as more compelling, relates to the existence of subjective experience, which has eluded scientific explanation and creates space for positing a metaphysical component to the universe. If God were responsible for a metaphysical component of the universe, then it would seem reasonable to posit that God has certain intentions or desires for creation. I will continue to explore this question next week.
