1. Activist Feedback
Rick Hershey, who continues to do amazing outreach, reports after leafleting
at Winter Jam in Peoria, IL:
Tyler Giles and I handed out 2000 CVA booklets mostly to kids at the Peoria
Civic Center. High winds made for challenging leafleting.Small crowd this
year made for a lower number of booklets. One kid said that she was going
vegetarian after receiving a booklet.

2. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principles of Nonviolence, part 5
A fifth principle is that nonviolence chooses love instead of hate.
Because this principle involves feelings rather than actions, it strikes me
as a spiritual rather than simply pragmatic position. Indeed, this principle
is well supported by Jesus’ teachings. The Sermon on the Mount includes
Jesus’ declaration “Blessed are the peacemakers,” and he taught that if
someone hits you on one cheek, offer the other cheek (Matthew 5:39; Luke
6:29). And, Jesus said that we should love our enemies (Mathew 5:44; Luke
6:27).
It is exceptionally hard to have a feeling of affection for those who seek
to harm us. I suspect that the “love” Jesus had in mind was a genuine desire
for the well-being of everyone, including those we would be inclined to
despise. I think this love is grounded in a faith that God cares about all
creation. One argument for this position resides in the observation that
conscious experience (which we know exists for ourselves and reasonably
conclude exists for others) exists in the world. Consciousness, which is
clearly related to the physical brain but seems apart from inanimate matter,
seems to have a metaphysical component. Many people have come to associate
God with this metaphysical component.
These thoughts encourage a reflection on the nature of faith. Does it
require, as critics of religion charge, believing impossible things? Or,
does faith include elements of trust and commitment? I will consider these
questions next week.
