1. Winter Jam offers great leafleting opportunities. Rick Hershey reports on success at Winter Jam events in Kansas City and St. Louis.

Obie, Tyler, and I handed out 3600 CVA booklets mostly to kids at WJ in Kansas City at the Sprint Center.I saw many people reading the booklet, and a few people thanked us for being there.

Tanaka, Dora, Jack, Tyler, and I handed out 3100 CVA booklets at WJ in St. Louis on January 28. Scottrade security guards interfered with us again at this public venue, but we still had a productive day of outreach largely to kids.Thanks to Tanaka, Dora, Jack and Tyler!

Rick shows how we can make a difference, and indeed many of our new CVA members first heard about the ministry from our booklet. It’s easy and fun to leaflet at Christian events. See below for some opportunities (with Winter Jam concerts being perhaps the best for leafleting).

2. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principles of Nonviolence, part 4

A fourth principle of nonviolence is that it requires accepting suffering without retaliation. Those engaged in nonviolent resistance should not seek suffering, but they should accept that suffering often occurs. Importantly, there are positive attributes to suffering, which include education and transformation. Further, there is a redemptive quality to unearned suffering.

Those who oppose animal abuse often find themselves in conflict with a wider culture that believes (very incorrectly, in my opinion) that harming animals is “necessary” for human well-being. They can experience alienation from family and friends, and they might ever suffer ostracism. In comparison, nonviolent protesters for civil rights were frequently beaten and imprisoned, and they were sometimes killed. These were grievous injustices, but at least the protesters were widely welcomed and admired by family and friends. So, there are many ways that those who resist injustice might suffer, but Jesus knew the dangers of speaking truth to power. For example, he said, “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” (Matthew 5:11)

All who experience suffering are transformed by the experience. Some become bitter and seek revenge, but one can learn other lessons. For example, one might see that those who perpetrate acts of violence are themselves responding to fear and alienation. One might find that the struggle for justice is a path toward a meaningful life. One might learn forbearance, which can transform a wide range of interpersonal relationships.

Next week, I want to explore the redemptive quality of suffering. Why should those working for peace and justice need redemption?

Stephen R. Kaufman, M.D.

3. Notice Regarding Research on Nutrients in Breast Milk

I am faculty at East Carolina University. Along with my collaborator from the University of North Carolina Greensboro are recruiting breastfeeding vegetarian and vegan women to participate in a research study that examines nutrient composition in breast milk. We need your help in this process. We have attached a flyer with information regarding eligibility to participate in the study. We are requesting that you forward this e-mail with the attached flyer to pastors and/or church members and/or post the attached flyer on your website to inform lactating women of this study.

The following are the basic eligibility criteria:

Delivered a healthy term infant that is currently 2 weeks old or older;
Willing to provide 1 sample of their breast milk and complete a diet survey;
Following one of the following diet patterns: vegan or vegetarian;
Women who live in Greensboro, Greenville, or the Research Triangle area of North Carolina are especially encouraged to participate.

Individuals selected for the study will be asked to complete a diet survey and donate a milk sample. Participation in this study will take approximately 30 minutes. Study participants will receive a $25 gift card.
