1. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principles of Nonviolence, part 3

A third principle of nonviolence is that it aims to defeat injustice and evil, not people. We cannot build the Beloved Community if we want to defeat people, because that requires violence, which begets further violence. Evidently, Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that we should focus on injustice and evil rather than people, because people who do evil are also victims and not evil themselves. They can be victims of ignorance, cultural biases, or evil institutions that encourage or coerce people to act against their innate sense of justice.

It seems to me that many people believe that some people are evil. There are clearly people who have little or no empathy or compassion, who seek only their personal gain or aggrandizement. Unfortunately, many successful politicians fit this mold, because scruples do not impede their pursuits. When we see how much harm such people can do, it is tempting to regard them as evil.

Next week, I will elaborate on this further, exploring whether or not evil people exist.
