Larry Brown’s Essay (e-newsletter 5/30)
Good essay. It could be
that the power of economics is stronger than that of mercy. Or perhaps
their taste for meat outweighs compassion or sensitivity to the
suffering of our fellow creatures. Other possibilities are the
influence of parents or doing what everyone else is doing. Bob
Innes I could not empathize with you more. Most
Protestant pastors and congregations seem to have misinterpreted the
Bible to mean that people are to slaughter God's creation! At best,
they believe that being "good stewards" of God's creation means
supporting the "right" of Big Oil and Big Coal and Big Meat Packers.
You might possibly find more empathy among the Lutherans,
Methodists, and Catholics. Catholics especially seem to lean towards
Green views. There are even a few Orders that lean towards a
vegetarian diet and meditative lifestyle. Unfortunately, meat-eating
does seem to cause people to become more crass, mean, and domineering.
It takes a really gruesome film, such as Paul McCarthy put on-line, of
the inner workings of a slaughter house to get through all the lard
covering most people's brains! Perhaps you ought to show that film
during these meetings with pastors. Even five minute might jolt their
consciences. Elise Hougesen
