1. Activist Feedback
Angie, who leafleted at Women of Faith in Indianapolis on August
24, writes:
I arrived at 5:25 pm and encountered a wonderful,
friendly, and receptive crowd. I started out on in the plaza area but
a security guard asked that I move to the street corner. That location
was fine, and I passed out 300 booklets by 6:00.

2. The
Sept.-Oct. Peaceable Table is now online
Contents include:
The *Editor's Corner Essay* reflects on the relationship between
pain, hope, and healing. What is the relationship between having
compassion for oneself and compassion for others? How does self-pity
fit in? What is the evidence that hope can actually strengthen our
immune systems? Is it possible to communicate the healing benefits of
hope to suffering animals?
In one of the *Unset Gems,* Victoria
Moran compares the well-known statement "Cows give milk" to "Muggers
think pedestrians "give" cash and jewelry." She thinks that "it's a
strange way to look at giving."
One of the *NewsNotes *points
out that the USDA allows meat moguls to sell dangerously polluted
products, and blame consumers if they get sick. What of
toymakers or car manufacturers were allowed to sell defective
products, and blame the victims who are injured or killed?
The
*Pioneer* in this issue is the remarkable emperor Ashoka, who ruled
India in the third century BCE. At first a typical warmongerer, Ashoka
saw some of the anguish he had inflicted on the innocent, and was
horrified. He was converted to Buddhism and not only committed himself
and his household to nonviolence, but established protections
(including medical care and laws against hunting) for animals
throughout his vast realm. Once almost forgotten, Ashoka's wonderful
(if temporary) achievement came to light as Victorian archaeologists
discovered a series of rocks and carved pillars with inscriptions of
his compassionate decrees.
A children's picture book, *A Home
for Spooky*, is featured in *Did You Miss This One*? A young
girl rescues a half-starved, very sick dog and gets her family
involved. The story is moving; the art is very fine.
Our recipe
editor Angela Suarez provides summer *Recipes* for an unusual and
refreshing green salad and miso dressing.

3. Comment
on Paul Hansen’s Note Last Week
Paul’s last sentence
“Ignorance is less repulsive and more comfortable” is so true.
Therein is the root of the problem, which is nothing less than
self-centric, hard-hearted, and definitely not Christ-like. Many
people hide behind the term “Christian.” I just can’t see how
anything will get through to people of that mind-set, but I do believe
books like ‘Guided by the Faith of Christ’ offer ways to start
chipping away.
