1. Respectful Outreach
We have many enthusiastic volunteers who are eager to promote
plant-based diets. We strongly encourage reaching Christians near
churches, but we emphasize two restrictions. First, we do not support
leafleting on private church property without permission, because
churchgoers will think we have permission and this is a church-endorsed
activity. This misapprehension will be resented and create ill-will
against our ministry. Second, we strongly discourage putting CVA
literature on car windshields, which many people dislike and tends to
waste our limited resources. As always, we welcome suggestions and
comments regarding outreach activities.
2. CVA Activism
The Christian Vegetarian Association (www.ChristianVeg.org) is
looking for volunteers to leaflet at the upcoming events with our “Would
Jesus Eat Meat Today?” booklets to spread the word about vegetarianism
as good stewardship of all of God’s Creation. Volunteers have a great
opportunity to earn $18.00 per hour (up to 2 hours) per person to be
donated to their favorite Animal Advocacy or Veg Group. For more
information please contact Paris at christian_vegetarian@yahoo.com or
Lorena at (770) 633-7415.
Jeff, who leafleted with Ashley, Cathy, John, and another friend at
the Women of Faith Conference in Phoenix on Sept. 23, writes:
We've been doing this event for a few years so we ran into some
people who already got one, but many did not. We got into a couple of
short conversations. Most people were eager to get inside the event, so
mostly we just leafleted. It was a great use of time as we were only out
there for an hour and easily reached over one thousand people!
Thanks for supplying the brochures! Please provide any donation to
Vegan Outreach. Thanks for all you do!

3. Vegan Diet Research
My name is Kelly Blanco and I am a graduate student in the Department
of Dietetics & Nutrition at Florida International University in Miami,
Florida. I am conducting a research study to examine the intake of
calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus in vegans. In order to accomplish
this, I am requesting permission to recruit subjects from your
organization to participate in this study.
I am requesting assistance to provide the link to the online survey
for your members and to encourage them to fill out the survey which will
take about 20 to 30 minutes of their time. It will provide information
on vegans’ dietary habits which are often neglected in research and will
aid dietitians in helping vegans plan an adequate diet to meet all of
their nutrient needs.
The estimated duration of the study is about four weeks and I am
seeking a total of 150 – 200 participants to complete the survey. The
study is available until mid-October.
Thank you for your help in carrying out this research study. Your
time and effort are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Kelly Blanco

4. Comment on Last Week’s Essay
CVA Coordinator Lorena Mucke writes:
I think a great example of feeling unfulfilled is when people achieve
enough financial wealth that they can purchase pretty much anything but
still feel depressed, alienated, etc. On the other hand, people who have
gone through great hardships are often joyful individuals because they
focus on what is meaningful in life.
By the same token, animal rights activists can feel depressed and
alone in a world where non-human animals are brutally exploited on a
daily basis and most people don’t seem to care. However, if their
activism provides meaning in their lives and they can find some
like-minded individuals to offer social support, it’s much easier to
cope.
Also, I think it helps – as you once mentioned to me – to remember
that there are many other sentient beings suffering so much more that we
are, which helps keep everything in perspective.
